hotel EFE, juchitan, oaxaca

In collaboration with Nomada de Tierra architects, Hotel EFE presents a thoughtful and context-sensitive response to the unique environment of the Tehuantepec Isthmus. Rooted in a deep understanding of the region’s vernacular architecture, cultural heritage, and local ways of living, the project seamlessly integrates traditional materials and techniques to create an experience that is both authentic and contemporary.

Bioclimatic strategies—such as cross ventilation and solar orientation—were implemented to ensure thermal comfort while maintaining harmony with the local climate and natural surroundings. Terracotta screens, crafted from locally made bricks, establish a visual and cultural connection to the region. These elements not only provide ornamental value but also create dynamic patterns of light and shadow, enhancing privacy between public and private spaces.

The hotel’s interior spaces further reflect a commitment to regional identity. Suites are adorned with bespoke area rugs from Teotitlán del Valle, handcrafted mosaics from Atzompa, and finishes that incorporate local mud and palm. These details celebrate the richness of Oaxaca’s diverse artisanal traditions, offering guests a restful and immersive experience deeply rooted in place.
